Jan Lips, a native of The Netherlands, has been coaching athletics since 1970. He taught Physical Education in Holland from 1971 till 1989. He has been a member of the Board of Education of the Royal Dutch Athletics Association during the 1980s and was responsible for the education of coaches at club level. He conducted several courses for youth and club coaches and he conducted the national coach level hurdles specialisation course. His love for coaching hurdles stemmed from working with talented hurdlers in his club 'KAV Holland' in Haarlem, where several of his athletes were champion or top three finishers at national championships. He lead the juvenile/junior men's team of 'KAV Holland' to a national club championship in the mid 1980s.

After immigrating to Canada in 1989, he worked for many years with coach John Cannon at the Calgary Spartans and Calgary International. Since 1999 he has joined the Calgary Warriors Track Club where he works with sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers. Several of his athletes have achieved top three finishes in Provincial Championsips and have made provincial teams in the hurdles and jumping events.

Jan has been a coach for the Provincial Legion team at Legion National Championships five times. He was assistent Team Leader with the Dutch team that competed at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton.

His own sports background has been in high school soccer and athletics. He started club track at the relatively late age of 19 and won the provincial junior championship in 100m that same year.
