Maria's World Championship Experience
March 22, 2011

The atmosphere at worlds was incredible. There was so much buzz and hype in the air. The stands were packed, and there was not a single spot on the course where there wasn't people cheering or cameras flashing. It felt surreal to be at worlds, to be warming up beside the Kenyans. When our team checked in together in the call room, and several different officials were counting us out, it started to feel more real. When our team all stood in the chute together we weren't very talkative, but I think we all felt really happy to have such a tight unit, and to be able to start out running with people we had really bonded with. When I saw myself up on the jumbotron at the start line, that was when I felt quite nervous.

In the actual race, the gravity of being in an international competition didn't really get to me, as you just treat it like a normal race. It felt pretty normal while I was running. The race was fast, needless to say. Coming out of the chutes was intense and we had practiced the day before how fast we wanted to start out. That was the tricky part, but I think we had a good order and none of us got sucked back. During the race we generally ran as a pack. A bit divided at times. An Algerian girl was constantly boxing me out and literally pushing me along the way. There were 3 sets of 3 obstacles every 2k, so 27 obstacles to jump over (which were just logs) and more hills than in Trinidad, which I quite liked. The race was aggressive and long, but it was an excellent course and the field was fast. Locals and family members of fellow teammates cheered us on, and I remember going up one hill where there were so many spectators that when they clapped it was a thunderous roar. It was a fun race! It was a bit difficult to gauge my pace at times as I had never ran a 6km race before, but it was good to learn from!

I am even more motivated now to get stronger. I hope to do it again someday! It was an experience like no other.
